Driller

As a driller, you assemble, position and operate drilling rigs and related equipment, to extract ore, liquids or gases from the earth.

A typical day may involve:

  • dismantling, moving and reassembling drilling rigs and accessory plant
  • performing minor maintenance and repairs, and lubricating and cleaning plant
  • taking samples of ore, liquids and gases and packaging them
  • recording performance details and information obtained from wells, and keeping logs detailing operations

It helps to be good at:

  • Using tools and machines 
  • Communicating clearly
  • Being organised 
  • Working with others

Qualifications/pathway options:

  • Cert III Drilling Operations
  • Cert IV Drilling Operations
  • Traineeship
  • Apprenticeship

You may be able to work in:

  • Construction 
  • Mining
